Formula 1 has revealed the simplified terminology that will be used to explain the advanced features of its upcoming 2026 rulebook.

The racing series is implementing what is arguably the biggest technical shift in its illustrious history for the 2026 campaign, featuring fresh chassis and power unit regulations and the compulsory introduction of eco-friendly fuels.

The revised engines, which keep the 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrid, boast a significantly increased battery power, driving key advancements in the vehicles' aerodynamic design.

During grand prix events, competitors will tactically deploy ERS energy – potentially on flying laps – to secure the peak lap time.

Extensive fan consultation were carried out with a mix of viewers, including long-time followers and newcomers, to understand which phrases would aid comprehension of the key features of the 2026 changes.

The stated goal was to make a series of complex new areas of the competition as straightforward as possible for the broadest viewership.

Consequently, older technical labels for some systems – such as "alphabetical mode names" for the adjustable aero – have been discarded in favor of straightforward terms that clearly indicate the real-world effect of the innovation.

Exploring the New Tech

Regulators explain that drivers will have greater control to determine tactics regarding energy deployment, regeneration, and efficiency.

The 2026 rules mandate a range of settings that will be shown on television graphics to enhance the audience's understanding of the race battle.

  • Passing Mode: This takes over from the current DRS. It provides a burst of extra electrical energy available when a competitor is within one second the leading car to execute an pass.

2026 Car Specifications

The next-generation machines will be more compact and lighter than this year, with a distance between axles cut by 200mm to 3,400mm, overall width reduced by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the minimum weight decreased by 30kg.

Total aerodynamic grip is anticipated to be reduced by approximately fifteen to thirty percent, although squads will undoubtedly recover some as they develop their cars.

Aerodynamic drag has been reduced by 40%. The vehicles will utilize adjustable aero systems – both wings will move on the straights to reduce drag and increase straightline speed and return into place for optimal grip in corners.

Tyres will retain 18-inch wheel rims, but the actual tyres will be slimmer, by a quarter-centimetre on the front and 30mm at the rear.

2026 Engine Regulations
