Last October, Adult Swim saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the network unveiled a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. In an era often characterized by cynicism, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and turned it into a surprise hit.
On December 18th, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The series follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."
Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and championed its peculiarly charming appeal.
"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about observing this lovable family go about their daily lives.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to evolve comedy past its current cynical streak. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
āIt feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,ā explained Cappa. āThe attitude is that we have to know weāre the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.ā
Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially catalyze that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to experience the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
