National Thunder Duo Issued Four-Match Suspension for Official Abuse at Africa Cup of Nations.
The team captain will be absent for his side's last group game at Afcon 2025.
The National Thunder captain Carlos Akapo and teammate Josete Miranda have both been banned for four matches for abusing the match official after their 1-0 defeat by Sudan at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The decision was made by a governing body committee after it reviewed the official's match report from the Group E clash on Sunday, a loss that sealed the team's elimination from the tournament.
The official stated that the two footballers "repeatedly directed insulting and offensive remarks" towards him and his linesmen after the full-time whistle.
"These remarks were made in a atmosphere of extreme anger stemming from the defeat, but nevertheless represent a grave breach of the principles of respect and fair play as well as the disciplinary regulations," added the official.
A portion of the individual bans for the two players have been deferred for a term of one calendar year.
Immediate Impact
Both players will be unavailable for their nation's final group match against Algeria on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the country's football federation has been penalized a sum of $10,000 after its coaching team and players engaged in "excessive and abusive complaints" against decisions by the officials.
The match report detailed there was "a progressive deterioration in conduct on the sidelines" following an own goal by Equatorial Guinea defender Saul Coco in the second half.
Further Disciplinary Action
Elsewhere, the tournament organizers have also fined Burkina Faso captain Bertrand Traore the sum of $10,000 for "offensive comments" made in a post-match interview following his team's 1-0 loss to their Group E rivals.
