Pat Cummins Set to Play a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Test match action

Pat Cummins has taken 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches kicking off on the 21st of November in the WACA.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about his chances of being involved.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations around that, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he will feature a significant role. With luck starting in Perth. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand recently after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

He has a history of recurring issues, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to make the squad for the contest.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the national team for their limited-overs matches against India as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches anyway. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
