City’s stadium has not staged an England men’s match since May 2016, when Turkey were beaten 2-1 in a friendly, but is almost certain to stage the national team for their opening fixture on a Saturday in June 2028.
The team are planned to play their concluding group fixtures at Wembley, but, in the event of winning their group, their round of 16 match would take place at the Newcastle stadium. Securing the runner-up spot would mean commencing the playoffs at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
The championship was launched at an ceremony in central London on Wednesday evening. High-ranking officials from Uefa and the host football associations were barracked as they approached the location by about 50 pro-Palestine demonstrators, who urged Israel to be expelled from global football because of the Gaza crisis.
Placards were held up with slogans stating “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while activists chanted: “Kick Israel out.”
The inaugural fixture of Euro 2028 will be held at the Cardiff’s stadium in the Welsh capital, on a Friday in June 2028, a fixture that will involve the Welsh team if they secure a place.
The national stadium will host the penultimate rounds and the final, which will be held on July 9, 2028 with a commencement at late afternoon.
It is expected that an earlier kick-off, which will also be used for UEFA Champions League finals from next season, will attract households and help connect with a broader range of viewers.
The Republic of Ireland are due to play their opening match at the Dublin stadium and Scotland would play similarly at Hampden Park.
Each host nation’s squad will enter the qualification process; two automatic spots will be held in reserve for any that do not reach the tournament through the qualification path.
Aston Villa’s stadium and Spurs’ ground finalize the nine tournament locations. Each one will hold at least one playoff fixture, with the quarter-finals held at the national stadium of each host.
The draw for the qualifiers will be conducted in Belfast, which was dropped as a host city last year when it emerged the Belfast stadium could not be redeveloped in time, on December 6, 2026.
