The Legendary Williams, Receives Wild Card for Her Initial Melbourne Major in Half a Decade.

Seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has secured a special invitation for the first Grand Slam of the year, which kicks off on January 18 in the city of Melbourne.

A Landmark Comeback to the Australian Courts

The event organizers confirmed on the weekend that the forty-five-year-old icon will make a return at Melbourne Park a remarkable 28 years after her first appearance. During 1998, she defeated her sibling Serena in the second round before bowing out in the last eight to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Summer Swing

Venus had previously revealed in November her plans to play in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a special entry, two weeks prior to the Australian Open. Organizers added that Williams is also entered to participate in Hobart, Australia a week later, immediately prior to the start of play at the main venue.

Her most recent visit in the city was in the year 2021, and she has been a finalist in the singles competition on two separate instances, falling short against Serena in the finals of 2003 and 2017.

"I am thrilled to be back in the country and looking forward to competing during the summer season," Venus stated. "I have experienced so many incredible memories there, and I’m grateful for the chance to return to a place that has meant so much to my professional journey."

Statistical Highlights

Williams' overall record at Melbourne Park stands at an impressive 54 wins and 21 defeats. This year will represent the 22nd time she has competed in the primary tournament field.

Establishing a Fresh Benchmark

Officials indicated that Williams is set to become the oldest woman to take part in an Open's singles competition, eclipsing the mark formerly set by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she lost in the opening round at the venue in 2015.

Recent Life Event

In late December, Williams wed Danish-born model and actor Andrea Preti in Florida's Palm Beach.
