NYC's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, vacating his rent-controlled apartment that became a focal point during his run for office.
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the mayoral home for the majority of New York City mayors from the post-war period.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a key platform, was not quick to announce his residency plans immediately following his victory in November.
"The choice rested on our family's safety and the importance of dedicating my full attention on enacting the platform on affordability New Yorkers voted for," stated Mamdani in a statement.
Mamdani lived in Astoria, Queens, a district renowned for its abundance of immigrant populations and culinary diversity.
"To Astoria: many thanks for exemplifying the best of New York City," he expressed.
"Even though I'm moving in Astoria, Astoria will continue to reside within me and my efforts as mayor," he added.
Throughout his campaign, Mamdani linked his key pledge – to freeze the rent – to his personal living arrangements.
But his opponents, including one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for living in the apartment although he came from a famous family.
Some mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his tenure, which concluded in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg argued it ought to be a venue for civic gatherings, and pushed for an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion for his swearing-in on 1 January, he will find himself in an environment very different than his modest Astoria digs.
With its butter yellow paint, forest green window covers, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure overlooking the East River.
Within, the lower floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished to reflect the home's early 19th-century origins.
The compound, which is said to has five bedrooms, also boasts increased security measures to protect the mayor and his family.
Some residents have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that they experienced doors opening and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards made strange noises.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care what anyone says," he stated in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
Mamdani's current apartment is rent stabilised, meaning the city imposes caps on how much property owners can hike the monthly cost each year.
Tenants see such units as crucial resources as the price of rent rises faster than what many can afford.
Records showed Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from the property website Zillow, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
