Alexandra Ching, a permanent inhabitant of Bondi, describes the iconic coast as her personal space. On that fateful Sunday evening, she, like many neighbors, heard pops ringing out through the community.

“Everyone did, but I thought it was daylight and there was nothing visible,” Ching states. Exiting her apartment, she witnessed people “pouring up Bondi Road”. The faces on display made it clear a crisis was unfolding.

As she stood on the avenue, talking to a duo who had run up the incline soaked, she noticed someone approaching at her rear. It was a beach patrol officer, running at full speed to Bondi unshod from the adjacent Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while holding a defibrillator.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I only caught a glimpse of this flash of blue,” she recalls. “He was zooming past. It was just him moving in the path that everyone was trying to get away from, carrying that large equipment and without footwear … He moved at something that surely every fibre in your being would instruct you to go in the other direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just completely maximum effort sprinting.”

An Iconic Image of Heroism Amidst Tragedy

The photograph Ching captured of the rescuer, now known to be Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as among numerous instances of heroism in the following of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, another beach safety officer, explained that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to assist the other members at Bondi, as well as to help surf lifesavers, law enforcement and paramedics attending to numerous the injured.
